Ethel Hayes was born February 10, 1926 in Retrop, Oklahoma to Lula (Hand) and John Wayne. She passed away June 18, 2019 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 8 days.
Ethel grew up in Retrop where she attended school. She participated on the basketball team before graduating in 1945. Ethel was later married to Carl P. Hayes on October 22, 1945 in Mangum, Oklahoma. After their marriage they lived in Hobart where they began their family. They moved to Oklahoma City where she found employment with Smith & Grider Grocery store before starting her career in banking in 1961 with Capital Hill State Bank. She later went to work for American National Bank in 1972. After Carl's passing in January of 1982 Ethel continued to work until 1985 when she retired and moved to Elk City. She enjoyed fishing with her grandsons when they were younger, gardening, working on her puzzles, mowing her yard, making quilts, going to the thrift store in Cheyenne and her daily lunches at Meals on Wheels.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl, one son, Larry James Hayes, 3 brothers and 1 sister.
She is survived by her son, Gary Hayes and wife, Gail, Oklahoma City, OK; 4 grandsons, Chris Hayes, San Antonio, TX, Daniel P. Hayes and wife, Kellee, Beggs, OK, Michael S. Hayes, Midwest City, OK and Chad D. Hayes, also of Midwest City, OK; 6 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 1 sister, Dorothy McCormack, Elk City, OK; 1 sister-in-law, Genny Wayne, Arizona and a host of nieces and nephews that are too numerous to count, other relatives and special friends.
Services will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019, 11:00 AM at Whinery Funeral Service chapel officiated by Kevin Davis. Burial will be in the Arlington Memory Gardens in Del City, OK on Monday, June 24, 2019, 11:00 AM under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service. Condolences may be made online at www.whineryfs.com
