Rizley is Alumni Parade marshal

Member of 60 year honor class

   The Eagle alumni tradition continues with the parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Sayre this Saturday.  Serving as parade marshal is 1959 Sayre High School graduate and long time Sayre teacher and coach, Keith Rizley.

   It’s often said that teaching creates all other professions.  In his 20 years as an educator, Keith no doubt had the opportunity to witness many students come and go, pursuing and succeeding in many lines of work.

   Keith grew up with teaching parents, Carl and Helen Gay Rizley.  Carl taught at Berlin and Cheyenne before serving as a Marine in WWII, and eventually becoming a lawyer in Sayre.  Helen Gay taught home economics at Sayre. Keith has four siblings many will know-Kent, Karla, Kelly and Kirk, all Sayre High School graduates.

   Although he would eventually become a celebrated teacher, life after high school didn’t start out quite like Keith had imagined.  As graduation was approaching that year in 1959 Keith recalled getting a scholarship from Panhandle University.  Boy, did he think he had it made!  Little did Keith know, his dad had other plans.  Before eventually attending college at Southwestern in Weatherford, Keith spent a year at a prep school, the all boys Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri. 

   While at Wentworth, Keith learned how to study, time management and he played football.  “I also made the swim team, which was a different sport for me,” he said.   “I was pretty good at it.  We played football and went to meets all over Missouri and I don’t think I was ever beat in the 200 and 100 back stroke,” he said, adding that he got his swimming talent from his mother who was also a good swimmer.

   At the conclusion of s successful year at Wentworth, Keith’s dad agreed to let him go to Southwestern in Weatherford where he met his future wife, Sharon, a 1960 graduate from Mangum High School.  While both completed their teaching degrees at Southwestern,...
