Great nephew joins procession to lay Cpl. Goldtrap to rest

As the United States and Allied Forces forged forward in the effort toward global freedom against the Axis Powers, a small town young man from Hobart, Oklahoma answered his country’s ultimate call to service by enlisting in the United States Marine Corp.

In November, 1943, 21-year-old Corporal Claire Eulin Goldtrap landed with fellow Marines against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Beto in the Tarawa Atoll of the Islands in an attempt to secure the island. 

Over several days of intense fighting at Tarawa, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors perished and 2,000 more were wounded, but ultimately, the Japanese were virtually annihilated.
