Elk Creek Strutters team with Honoring American Warriors for guided hunt
The local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Elk Creek Strutters, partnered with Scotty Deatherage and Honoring American Warriors to take disabled veterans on a guided deer hunt in western Oklahoma. President Bobby Armstrong put the two groups together through the state NWTF organization, who provided equipment and funding for the event.
“Since August, we put together a committee that started to work on this. I became interested because if something happened to me and I became disabled, I would want someone to help me. The state provided the equipment, even an electric wheelchair we could have used,” Armstrong explained.
The guide and veterans gathered Friday evening and began their hunt early Saturday morning. The three veteran guests included Kennan Horn from Edmond, West Long originally from Virginia but moved to Edmond and Shane Mayall from Anadarko. They were joined by their guides Brian Taylor, David Daniels, Daren Daniels, Jacob Smith, Dustin Thomas and Armstrong. Susan Thomas, Janie Adams, Macinly Raulston and Amber Armstrong also took part in the weekend event with support and food.
“I have been involved with the Honoring American Warriors for the past four years and you can’t tell, but I’m legally blind. When I retired from the Army, I hoped to relax and do the things I love, fishing and hunting. Because of this disease, I can’t drive or do the things I always thought I would be able to do. Scotty (Deatherage) program focuses on outdoor activities. I haven’t been able to do this, not I’m looking forward to coming out next year,” Horn said.
The three other veteran guests concurred with Horn’s assessment of the program. Each was thankful for the opportunity to get out in nature to get a deer.
