Child Advocacy Center continues to serve needs of children
Prior to the establishment of the Child Advocacy Center (CAC), located in Sayre, a child who needed to be interviewed concerning a possible abuse situation went to the Elk City Police station. This was an intimidating place where the abuser was also interviewed. The results for the child was additional trauma.
Sayre City Manager, Guy Hylton, provided a place dedicated to the safety as well as a non-threatening environment for these interviews and examinations to be held. Dannie Sanders, OSBI Special Agent and Chairman of the Child Abuse Team, has been instrumental in working with Hylton on getting the center up and running.
“I would like to thank Guy Hylton and the City of Sayre for providing the building. The only cost we have is the electric bill. A lot of families have come to the CAC and we hope it is a positive experience. If anyone would like to see it or tour it they can call me and I will arrange it,” Sanders said.
According to the General Information on the Start CAC Facebook page the centers, “are child-focused centers that coordinate the investigation, prosecution, and treatment of child abuse while helping abused children heal. CAC’s emphasize the coordination of investigation and intervention services by bringing together professionals and agencies as a multidisciplinary team to create a child-focused approach to child abuse cases. Although some aspects of a multidisciplinary approach to child abuse can exist without a facility, a supportive, child-focused facility is fundamental to a CAC. The location is designed to create a sense of safety and security for the children.”
Sanders and the team members take the mission seriously and meet regularly at the building. The team consists of representatives from the following agencies: DHS, Law enforcement from Elk City, Sayre, Roger Mills, OSBI, Medical, Dr. Treva Graham, and Lindsay Marks, Mental Health, Victim Advocacy and the Assistant District Attorney.
